SEO is a Marathon, not a Sprint!

I recently got an email from one of my Tampa SEO Training Academy students asking me for my thoughts on a company that said they would:

“Give your website a top 10 search listing in over 350+ search engines and directories!

    • Guaranteed Top 10 Listing
    • Includes 350+ Search Engines
    • 150 Million Searches Per Month”

and that they could also:

“Get Guaranteed Top 10 Exposure for Your Website
New! We’ve just increased our search network by 100 additional Search Engines for no extra cost!”

OH… and they will do all that at just $9.99 per month…

Laughing so hard it hurtsHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…

OMG, please make it stop!  My ribs hurt from laughing so much.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Look, I’m not going to name who these guys are (savvy Google users will be able to figure that out for themselves). However, my thoughts on these “Ma-Roons” are  exactly what you’d expect them to be particularly if you’ve ever heard me talk about what makes a quality website these days.

These guys are offering a “service” that is total horse-hockey and not worth the time it would take you to read their marketing material.

They make it sound like you are going to get tons of great traffic and number one  rankings for pennies a month in no time at all… YEAH RIGHT!

In actuality, they are part of a network of teeny-tiny “search engines” with alternative Pay-Per-Click programs (similar to Google Adwords) that each provide paid ads.  Your $9.95 will get your “Ad” displayed on their worthless network. Of course, if you happen to get even a smidgen of traffic at all from these sites you can consider yourself lucky.  Getting a conversion… yeah right!

These guys are everything that is wrong with online marketing today.

Don't be the hare in the SEO race.

In the post Panda and Penguin world there are no short-cuts and no quick-fixes to building links and traffic overnight and you can bet your sweet bunny that this is especially true at $9.95/month!

You can no longer try being the Hare in the SEO race, you need to focus all your efforts on being the Tortoise!

So what is considered Good SEO for Google these days?

There are lots of things you can do to succeed on Google these days.  For instance, you should try to:

  • Create excellent content on a regular basis that people want to read and share, (in fact, please share this article if you like it)
    • What’s a regular basis you ask??? At least once a week is best, but anything is better than nothing.
  • Share your awesome content socially on your own networks to help you build your brand awareness, your audience and your relationships.
  • Continue to partner with relevant and authoritative businesses in your industry or in industries very similar to yours. (As an example, a roofer might partner with a brick-paver or an electrician as all work on homes.)
  • Be sure to also get your satisfied customers to leave you great reviews on Google+, Yelp, LinkedIn and more.

Of course that is just the tip of the iceberg!

Looking for links?

  • Consider asking your best customers to link to your site using your website URL or your Brand Name.
  • Maybe you have some suppliers or vendors that would be willing to link to your site.
  • How about listing your business in a high quality targeted industry directory (like Findlaw for the legal business or the APDT for the dog training business) or even a quality local directory if your business sells in a particular city or town.
  • Try to sponsor an event where your company is named as a sponsor and perhaps linked to.
  • Do some guest blogging on quality sites that have real editorial guidelines, and look for top quality guest bloggers for your own site. Be sure the content you send to others or post to your site is original and unique not copied or “spun” from somewhere else.
  • Remember to primarily use your URL and your Brand Name when acquiring these links or you might face the wrath of Penguin!

Wow… that sounds like a lot of work, man.

Let’s be honest… it’s a long, hard road to online success these days particularly if you are in a competitive field. Your best bet is to stop looking for the quick fix (like those shmoe’s above are trying to rope you into) and start to implement a slow, steady and never-ending process of quality link acquisition and real customer reviews by satisfied clients.

Here are a few questions to consider before doing anything you’re unsure of in order to keep your site safe.  This is right out of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines… “A good rule of thumb is whether you’d feel comfortable explaining what you’ve done to a website that competes with you, or to a Google employee. Another useful test is to ask, ‘Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn’t exist?'”

Slow and Steady will win the Google SEO race.

Tortoise wins the SEO raceAs it says in the title of this post SEO is a Marathon, not a Sprint so don’t get left in the dust. Don’t give up and don’t take short cuts or you could end up getting disqualified from the race for “cheating”.
